When talking about skincare, SkinPen® microneedling, is one of the most popular treatments Dr. Downing offers at his Houston dermatology practice. This versatile treatment addresses many skin issues such as acne scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and uneven skin.
If you are interested in learning more about microneedling, please request a consultation at our practice or call (713) 487-8233 to meet with one of our skincare experts. They can provide a full assessment of your skin to determine if you’re a good candidate for SkinPen microneedling.
What Is SkinPen Microneedling Used For?
SkinPen is considered the #1 recommended dermatological treatment to improve skin’s appearance, and here’s why:
- It is the first FDA approved microneedling device
- It is proven to be both safe and effective
- It is quick and simple, involving very little downtime
- It promotes healthier, younger-looking skin!
How Does SkinPen Microneedling Work?
SkinPen helps resurface the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin, leading to a more even skin tone over time. Collagen and elastin are proteins found in the connective tissue of the skin. As we age, these proteins will break down over time, resulting in wrinkles. Therefore, SkinPen is a great option for rejuvenating the skin.
SkinPen works by creating “micro-injuries” in the skin, which initiates the healing process. This activates the immune system to heal the areas by bringing in fresh strains of collagen. In addition to renewing the collagen supply in the treated areas, it keeps the overall structure of the skin intact.
One of the perks of SkinPen is that it does not involve any heat or chemicals, allowing for a safe and natural healing process.
What Is a SkinPen Treatment Like?
Many people find themselves wondering, “What does a SkinPen treatment entail?”
At Houston Dermatology Specialists, Kimberly Caspari RN (Nurse Kimberly) performs most SkinPen procedures. We start off your SkinPen treatment by applying a topical numbing cream applied over the areas that will be treated. This step provides comfort and ease during the procedure.
After the area has been properly numbed, the topical numbing cream is removed with the Elta MD foaming facial cleanser. Nurse Kimberly then applies the Skinfuse glide to the treatment area. This is a serum that allows the SkinPen to move smoothly across the skin while providing hydration to the treated areas. She then applies the SkinPen to the treatment area, using it to create micro-channels in the skin to promote natural healing and reveal refreshed skin.
What Is SkinPen Recovery Like?
After the treatment is complete, the treated areas will be red and feel like a sunburn. Most patients are less red and more pink the next day, then slightly pink by day three.
Dr. Downing recommends waiting a minimum of two weeks after a SkinPen microneedling treatment before patients restart their normal skincare routine using products that include active ingredients such as vitamin C and retinol for best results.
How Often Will I Need SkinPen Microneedling Treatments?
We will recommend a treatment plan designed to meet your specific needs, but for most patients Dr. Downing typically recommends SkinPen patients have 3 to 4 treatments done, spaced every 4 weeks to allow the skin to heal and replenish collagen.
